Description

Dedicated to my  friends and watchers as a token of my appreciation for my birthday gifts and well wishes. I am deeply touched by your kindness. Thank you very much for all that you do not only on my birthday, but always.:heart:

While visiting the City of Ventura on the California's West Coast in 2013 for our 43rd wedding anniversary, we came upon this incredible China Alley Memorial Mural. I was not aware it was there. The memorial is magnificent and the fountain is amaing in it grandeur.  The tile work is incredible and many people during meal times sit around it and enjoy their food and drinks. It was difficult for me to get a good shot of all of it because there were people in the way. I did get a few of only part the wall or part of the fountain, but I really wanted to include both in my shot.  So this is the best one I have showing both the wall and the fountain in one shot. I think the people around me at some point felt sorry for me doing this over and over again only to have one or several of them get in my shot, so they kindly all moved out of the way long enough for one last shot and this is it. LOl

MEMORIAL WALL IS 10 FEET HIGH BY 50 FEET WIDE. THE FOUNTAIN AS YOU CAN SEE IS ALMOST AS WIDE AS THE WALL AND CONTINUES ON THE LEFT SIDE TO THE SIDEWALK IN A STRAIGHT LINE SEVERAL YARDS AWAY, WATER FLOWS THROUGOUT THIS SECTION AS WELL.

THE HISTORY OF CHINA ALLEY.

Nothing remains of Ventura's Chinatown (called Sui Mon Gong by its residents) that began in 1866 and grew to house over 200 Chinese until 1923.

But in 2004, Ventura's Chinese American Historical Society commissioned respected Chinese artist Qi Pang and his wife Guo Song Yun to create China Alley Memorial Mural to depict the simple wooden buildings that made up a completely self-contained community with its own shops, businesses, rooming houses, and a Taoist Temple that non-Chinese called "The Joss House".

In the early 1880’s, a flourishing Chinese settlement made up of merchants, laborers, and families settled in an area along Figueroa Street between Main and Santa Clara Streets.

The largest concentration of activity was in an area known as China Alleywhich ran perpendicular to Figueroa Street.

The Chinese immigrants built housing, grew and sold food, and provided a place of worship for the immigrants. Artisans, vegetable gardeners and fishermen plied their trade. Merchants exported marine products and imported Chinese goods.

Other contributions of the Chinese immigrants to the community included a water flume above the San Buenaventura Aqueduct along Ventura Avenue and the Chinese Fire Brigade that served China Alley and the surrounding neighborhood.

The Chinese Brigade was often the first fire company at the site of a fire and was instrumental in saving many structures in the downtown area. During the early days of immigration, the people of San Buenaventura welcomed their new Chinese neighbors as an inexpensive source of labor.

However, with the incorporation of strict national immigration laws in the early 20th century, a hostile environment forced the residents of China Alley to relocate to other areas.
